We abhor banner ads. - We believe most of our visitors do to. Those that really dont like them end up using filters, which then negates the point. And then of course we'd have to deal with the networks. Networks like UGO, require 1 million pageviews a month just to be considered. - At this time, we dont make near that. Our best month was about 70,000. Then theres the fact that the banner ad market has tanked over the past year. But it aint all that bad. - If we were pulling a million pageviews a month, I'd quit my day job. The money is that good, even in these bad conditions. - Consider, at even just $1/cpm, that still means that every site on the UGO network would be bringin in at least $1000/month. Then they subtract their hosting costs. - For us, 10 Gigs is enough to do 1 million pageviews. We have a good site design. - For others, they might not have it so easy. This is why many sites who were using banner ads now find themselves in trouble, and to make more, they go with the intrusive popup ads, delayed popup ads, exit popup ads, multiple popups, etc. I dont know about the rest of you, but I tend not to frequent those sites as much, its a huge turnoff. Banner ads, just aren't our style.
It's being considered, but I kind of hate the thought at the moment. Lets say it cost you $1 / month to view content on this site beyond news. - Would you do it? Some might, some wouldnt, but it would definately cause a stink. - Plus, there'd be plenty of peeps who would pay it, then give out the login information. We're not discounting the idea, but if we were to do something like this, it'd be down the road. - Personally, I dont think we have enough content yet. We're just getting started.
This one is being seriously considered. - Through my testing of the one game we support right now, Fallen Age, I've come to know alot about what makes it tick, what file formats are there, and I've got some ideas for things that may be "sellable". - Im working on these now. - The upside is you'd buy something once, and use it as often as you wish. You would have a direct benefit. The downside is like subscriptions.. peeps may "share" the stuff they buy, so I'm workin on ways to prevent, or at least limit this.
Heh. - Its a bad economy, I know. - If you want to help support the site, you can still do so without donating money. Consider the following ways you can help:
Depends. - Right now, I can afford to pay the costs out of pocket. If I couldn't I wouldnt have started in the first place. But, rediculous life-altering events seem to be an everyday occurance with me, so in the long-term, I can't guarantee it. I could find myself out of work. And as anyone who has been out of work, or been on a tight budget knows, the "extras" go first.
Excellent! - Send me the details. - Name of the host, the url, price per month, and features. - Email me at krozy@theonlinegamer.com. Just try to keep in mind that we need to stick with Windows as the platform for ASP, and database access, and our primary concerns are uptime, stability, bandwidth, and storage space. Yes, I know Unix and Linux hosts are cheaper, and they do MySQL. - Thing is, we couldnt use that without recoding the site, which would mean about 2-3 months of coding, which could otherwise be spent on getting you new information.
If you want to, sure. Forward me the email you get thanking you for donating. - From that I can verify, and note your support. - This also lets me carry over your support from donations if we start selling stuff. I won't however make you some "uber-member" on the site with rediculous privledges, don't ask. - That would be unfair, and would damage the credibility of the site.
